  • Despite available treatments, global TB prevalence is still significant and has devastating health, social and economic consequences. It’s the leading infectious cause of death globally.
  • Raising awareness about tuberculosis, what it is, and how to prevent its spread can help lower tuberculosis rates around the globe.
  • The more people know about tuberculosis and the importance of stopping the spread of the disease, the more focus — and funds — can be shifted toward stopping it.
  • One third of the world’s population is estimated to have latent TB infection (LTBI); meaning, they do not have active TB disease but may develop it through a process of reactivation of dormant bacilli that start multiplying and produce active TB.
  • The WHO strongly recommends treatment for latent TB infection in two priority groups:
  • people living with HIV, and
  • children aged under 5 years who are household contacts of someone who has bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB.
  • The WHO also suggests BCG vaccination be provided as part of national childhood immunization programs according to a country’s TB epidemiology.
  • For many, the stigma associated with TB and the lack of understanding of the importance of early detection and treatment delays care seeking.
  • Digital health tools and virtual networks serve to educate and reduce stigma. Websites maintained by NGOs serve as resources for prevention, outreach, and screening.
