Innovator Pathway

Overlap between the stages is intentional and representative of iteration that occurs during the development, qualification, evaluation and scale-up process.

Stage 1: Identify Needs and Design Stage 2: Begin R&D Stage 3: Plan for Introduction Stage 4: Introduce & Scale

Click on any the red bars to jump to best practices and resources for innovators at each stage in the innovator pathway.

To facilitate innovators seeking to bring new innovations to support and enable these ideal TB Care models, we have:

  • Detailed a typical digital health product development, qualification, evaluation and scale-up pathway,
  • Linked best practice (exemplary or illustrative) information for other innovations that have successfully navigated this pathway
  • Provided evidence base and contact information for these best practice innovators

Stages

Stage 1: Identify Needs and Design

Stage 2: Begin R&D

Stage 3: Plan for Introduction

Stage 4: Introduce & Scale

NOTE:  In our work, we have identified as a clear best practice the work of USAID’s Center for Innovation and Impact (CII), and especially their publications IDEA TO IMPACT,  READY, SET LAUNCH, AND PATHWAYS TO SCALE, each referenced above.  To facilitate access by innovators to the information contained in those publications and this web site, we have organized our content consistent with the innovation phases used by CII in their publications.

TB Innovator Pathway Resources

Across the innovator pathway, multiple resources are available to guide best practice development of digital health technologies. Some of these may not be specific to TB or digital health, but they nevertheless provide relevant and valuable insight and guidance.

USAID

In addition to their web-based tools, USAID has published several innovation guides including IDEA TO IMPACTREADY, SET LAUNCH, AND PATHWAYS TO SCALE. To facilitate access by innovators to the information contained in those publications and this web site, we have organized our content consistent with the innovation phases used by CII in their publications.

WHO

The World Health Organization published their 2019 Global TB Report, a comprehensive assessment of the TB epidemic that is particularly helpful in early stage planning and development. They also have multiple resources specific to digital health in TB, including Target Product Profile guidance and the Handbook for the use of digital technologies to support tuberculosis medication adherence. Additionally, they collaborated on a guide entitled “Monitoring and Evaluating Digital Health Interventions.”

Stop TB Partnership

The Stop TB Partnership publishes a Global Plan, which serves as a roadmap to accelerating impact on the TB epidemic and reaching the targets of the WHO End TB Strategy. They have also categorized country burden. And they collaborated on the TB Diagnostics Critical Pathway to serve as a resource for innovators in TB diagnostics.

GIE

Global Innovation Exchange is a global development technology platform for innovations, funding and insights. GIE's mission is to help scale the most promising global development innovations by utilizing its ever-growing database of information to serve as a reliable fundraising resource for social entrepreneurs in low-and-middle-income countries, as well as a source of credible innovation data for the international.

An article entitled “The two 'valleys of death' that hold back the fight against TB” sheds light on the struggles innovators face when bringing new TB solutions to bear: moving from development to commercialization and from commercialization to roll out.

IDEO

IDEO shares their Human-Centered Design or HCD Toolkit and other web-based resources.

The Arcady Group

The Arcady Group has been involved in wide range of innovation, evaluations, and other initiatives regarding TB treatment adherence, patient-centered observation, and adherence and outcomes-enhancing differentiated care. To facilitate innovation of others, they published a collection of insights, resources, and toolkits.
